E-ZPass, the electronic toll-collection system used on most toll bridges and roads in the north-eastern US, was first deployed on the New York Thruway at the Spring Valley toll plaza. Tags fitted on vehicle windscreens communicate with reader equipment built into toll-collection lanes by reflecting back a unique radio signature. The appropriate fee is then taken from the driver’s bank or prepaid account.
