If we had to flip back the calendar to a decade, then one thing that will shine in bright and bold is what happened on 2 June ‘2008. 

In a stellar of a deal, Ford Motors decided to press the brakes, stop the engine, park the car and hand over the keys of its high-class British Jaguar and Land Rover (JLR) brands to Tata Motors, an Indian multinational automotive manufacturing company. The sale of the two luxury brands to the company owned by business mogul Ratan Tata was a testimony of the quality, service and credibility of the corporation, despite its experience in mostly inexpensive, small cars. 

Going down another 9 years, in 1999, Tata Group wanted to sell its car business to Ford to only be disregarded. But when destiny has brilliant plans for you, then deals don’t always work out and for good. Consequently, the JLR deal became a startling first as it made a momentous mark in the world of motoring across the globe. 

What worked?

Taking both the magnificent brands under its wing, Tata Motors made significant decisions like retaining the manufacturing of these cars in the United Kingdom, keeping the workforce intact and preserving their distinctive identities. The Group gave JLR a lease of life as it made inroads to untouched developing and potential market in the BRIC nations. With an increase of 200% in China, the Tata success story became a part of the management books. 

What changed & worked?

The company started manufacturing out of the UK to other cost-effective markets like China, India and Brazil. They also sourced locally in respective geographies to gain supply chain effectiveness. Thus, now JLR is no longer a solely Britain manufactured car. JLR has increased its presence by opening more dealerships globally and are now available in every top-tier and most mid-tier cities in North America, Europe, Asia and other parts of the world. Also, with companies like JLR Essex that specialises in service, maintenance and repairs for Jaguar Land Rover and Range Rover vehicles have helped customers get the after sale service from anywhere.

Wondering, what happened to car model? You will be surprised to know that the none of the Jaguar or Land Rover model are the same as 2008. Each of them has completely been revamped and re-designed to give them a modern yet classy look. Admirable car models like the Jaguar XJ (2010) or the Range Rover (2013) started mass-production to capture market share and increase revenue. The firm came up with less priced V6’s and High-efficiency diesel engines in Jaguar-F-type, XK, XJ & F-Pace & Land Rover-RR, RRS, LR4, Evoque, Discovery models making the brand popular amongst the middle-income groups as well.

Over the years, they have approximately infused money in the range of £2.5-3.5 billion a year and has plans to invest a total of £4.3bn in FY18 for developing new products, technologies and facilities.

According to Credit Suisse, Jaguar Land Rover’s value has risen to $20 billion from $2.3 billion in 2008, when it was bought by Tata Motors, giving the latter over 25 percent annual return. For Jaguar Land Rover, China is its top market, followed by North America and the UK. 

The firm is taking gigantic steps with re-starting production of the iconic D-type race car after 62 years of the last example that was built in 1956. JLR is also building a plant in Slovakia that will start production by the end of 2018. It will manufacture a range of all-new aluminium Jaguar Land Rover vehicles to deliver high-tech lightweight cars to its customers. 

In India, it plans to launch at least 10 models in 2018-19 (April-March). Some models of the expected line-up include the refreshed Range Rover Sports SVR, and the updated Range Rover SVAutobiography, F-Type SVR which is the fastest road-going Jaguar, the Range Rover SV coupe, world’s first full-size luxury SUV, etc.

The company will set to launch I-Pace Concept, an electric vehicle, Project 8 its most powerful street-legal Jaguar vehicle in history in the USA.


Since, its acquisition 10 years ago, Jaguar Land Rover has only cemented its place further in the automotive world. With nothing but high quality, technologically advanced luxury cars expected from the company, its future line-up is everything that a car lover should wait for. Not only that, this year, 2018, also sees JLR celebrating the 70th anniversary of its Land Rover. It was a historic moment for the company when it globally unveiled the original Land Rover model at the Amsterdam Motor Show of 1948. For all automobile lovers, actually, Land Rover enthusiasts, the company is all set to celebrate its anniversary with you as it will launch a limited-edition high-performance version of the iconic ‘defender’. The iconic ‘defender’ with 150 V8-powered examples is re-engineered to celebrate the brand’s 70th anniversary in 2018.

To close, all we would want to say is if it is luxury then it ought to be Jaguar Land Rover.
