Darrell Waltrip scored his first career win at Bristol Motor Speedway in the Southeastern 500. While this marked the first win at Bristol for Waltrip, he went on to win a total of 12 times at the .533 mile speedway. During his 1978 season he went on to win five more races and finished third in the points standings.
