Dale Earnhardt overcame three penalties, one for rough driving, to win the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, North Carolina (US). Earnhardt took a 129-point lead in the championship chase over Rusty Wallace, who raced despite injuries suffered at Talladega.
