How to build a car driveway

The installation of a driveway, and parking area, at your property is sure fire way not only to make your life much easier and improve your safety, but also to increase the value of your property.
According to Home Morphing when you consider how to build a car driveway you will need to think about many factors including your property situation, the size of area you would need to cover, and the finish you will be looking to achieve.

How large an area would you be thinking about?

Clearly that will depend, in the main, upon the amount of space you have available – if you are a semi-detached with a front garden that only has space for one car accessed over a drop-down kerb then this is easy for you to answer.  If, however, you are set back and have an acre between your property and the road frontage then you have a much wider choice and the design available will be harder to settle on.
You will want to consider at this early stage the splay at the road edge, and also the turning circle within he property, so that if at all possible you can both enter and exit the property in forward gear for safety reasons.
How many cars do you need the off-road parking for?  If you live alone, a small parking space may suffice – four teenage children and you are shortly going to need a car park out there!

What is the current surface?

The amount of work necessary will also depend upon what is currently there – and what may need taking away before you can start constructing the surface you would like.
The job sill also be more difficult if you have a steeply sloping frontage.  Ideally you will have a large flat area of grassland – but that’s rarely the case.

What finish would you like?

There are so many choices that it is hard to decide – and the choices come at all price bands.
Asphalt? Permeable Block paving?  Concrete?  Gravel?  Grass Paving?

Budget

You may like to think about budget even at this early stage, in many cases this will help to narrow down the choices that you are looking at and will be closely related to your choice of finish.  When you are calculating your driveway costs make sure that you have calculated the area correctly, definitely check it twice.  The last thing you need is to get things in hand and work out that you have forgotten to add a zero.

Who is going to carry out the work?

Is this something that you are going to attempt yourself?  Will you get a contractor in?  Do you know someone who will work with you and help to build it?
Once again, your decisions are interconnected.  Fitting grass paving is labour intensive, but not too difficult.  Laying concrete though is very specialised and needs heavy equipment.  Try not to be too ambitious, a large project could end up costing even more money if you set out to do something that you are unable to complete.

Planning and Permissions

Once you have decided on your area and finish, and know you can afford it, consult with your local planning laws.  There are many restrictions depending upon size, and anticipated drainage, not to mention access and egress from the Highway.  No one wants to spend their time building something that they have to take out again.
