Born on this day, Bugs Stevens, a three-time champion in NASCAR Modified competition. As legend has it, Carl Bergman began racing under the fictitious name to avoid drawing negative attention from his commanding officers while serving in the Air Force. The pseudonym stuck. Stevens — a Massachusetts native — won three straight titles from 1967-69 and was a four-time champion at Stafford Speedway in Connecticut.
