Born on this day, Tony Maggs, a racing driver from South Africa who participated in 27 Formula One World Championship Grands Prix, debuting in July 1961. He achieved three podiums, and scored a total of 26 championship points. Maggs shot to prominence being signed by the works Cooper Formula 1 team for 1962 and 1963, partnering Bruce McLaren and finishing 2nd twice in the French Grand Prix. Out of a drive in 1963 after losing his seat with Cooper, he tried the BRM of Scuderia Centro-Sud for three races in 1964 and had an outing in the 1965 South African Grand Prix with a Lotus-BRM, which would be his last Formula 1 race. Racing in F2 for the remainder of the season he had a crash at Pietermaritzburg injuring spectators and killing a child. Shocked, he retired from racing to his farm in South Africa, only to suffer another tragedy. He surived a crash with a light aircraft, but his farm manager was killed in the accident.
