Born on this day, Lorenzo Bandini , Italian driver who achieved great success in sports car racing with Ferrari, triumphing at the 1963 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 1965 Targa Florio. In 1967, paired with Chris Amon, he won a legendary edition of the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 1,000 km of Monza. After one win at the 1964 Austrian grand Prix, Bandin’s F1 career was not as brilliant and ended tragically. In 1967 at Monaco, after coming in 2nd for the last two editions of the Grand Prix, Bandini was determined to win, but on lap 82 while chasing Hulme for the lead, he clipped the chicane and rolled his Ferrari suffering appalling burns as the car erupted in flames. Lorenzo passed away three days later on May 10 1967. He was 31 years old.
