Born on this day, John Barber, US racecar driver. At the start of the 1971 season Skip, as he became known, purchased a March 711 which he planned to take back to the United States and race in the US Formula 5000 series. Before he did so, he took part in the Monaco and Dutch Grands Prix and then contested the United States and Canadian races and again in 1972. After that he raced GT cars. However, he has become better known since his retirement thanks to his founding of the Skip Barber Racing School, a major race driving academy that has branches around the United States and has trained thousands of drivers.
