Born on this day, Hap (James) Sharp, American race car driver who drove in six Formula One Grands Prix, best known as co-owner and driver of the revolutionary Chaparral sports racing cars built with Jim Hall in Midland, Texas. A tycoon in the oil business, he not only financed his own racing, but was a backer of Jim Hallís Chaparral sports car project. The two of them actually won a race in Sebring in 1985 sharing a Chaparral. Sharp committed suicide while in Argentina in 1993 at the age of 65.
