Born on this day, Darrel Waltrip, NASCAR racer, who in 1986 became the first stock-car driver to earn $7 million. Having started in the business racing go-carts at the tender age of 12, Waltrip did not retire from the NASCAR circuit until 2000. Waltrip was Winston Cup champion three times and won 84 races in his career. Waltrip currently owns Honda, Subaru, and Volvo , auto dealerships in his current hometown of Franklin, Tennessee, and is a lead television analyst and race commentator with Fox and with SpeedTV. He is the older brother of NASCAR driver and team owner Michael Waltrip.
