Born on this day, Andre Michelin, French tyre manufacturer, who with his brother Edouard, founded the Michelin Tyre Co to manufacture bicycle tyres. The Michelin Man is one of the world’s oldest trademarks, dating from 1898. Andre said that his Michelin Man was based on his chubby brother Eduoard, who, he said, resembled a stack of tyres. The company also became famous for its European travel guide and rating of restaurants using its converted three-tar system. Michelin Tyre Co inventedthe radial tyre and is now experimenting with computerized ‘talking tyres’.
