Bobby Allison in the Bud Moore Ford took the lead from Buddy Baker with 11 laps to go, to win the Daytona 500. Allison and Baker had collided during a 125-mile qualifying race three days earlier, forcing both to start well back in the field (Allison started 33rd). Baker blew the engine in the M.C. Anderson Chevy with 5 laps left to move Cale Yarborough into second, 33.2 seconds behind Allison.
