Wednesday 27th June 1956

BMC announced the redundancy of 12.5% (6,000) of its workforce. The dismissals were unprecedented as far as post-war Britain was concerned and it came as a rude shock to the nation. This event had unforeseen long-term consequences for the whole industrial relations climate in the motor industry.
