Benny Parsons held off Richard Petty by 0.45 seconds to win the Coca-Cola 500

Benny Parsons held off Richard Petty by 0.45 seconds to win the Coca-Cola 500 at Pocono Raceway (Pennsylvania, US), his seventh career victory in NASCAR’s top series. Parsons started fourth and led 118 of the 200 laps. Petty’s runner-up finish moved him into the points lead past Cale Yarborough, who wound up sixth. Pole-starter Darrell Waltrip took third.
