Saturday 19th September 1953
Auto Union launched a new 24hp 896 cc 3-cylinder model, “3=6 Sonderklasse” (DWK 3=6), at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Developed before the war in Chemnitz, it was supposed to go into volume production in 1940. The name 3=6 referred to the fact that a 3-cylinder two-stroke engine had the power characteristic of a six-cylinder four-stroke engine thanks to twice the number of combustion cycles. The two-door saloon, produced until September 1955, was also very successful in rallying, winning the European Rally-Championship in 1954.
