Andy Warhol’s 1963 painting Green Car Crash (Green Burning Car I), depicting an overturned car on fire, was sold for $71.7 million (£36.3 million) in New York. This easily beat the previous auction record for work by the pop artist, set the previous November when a painting of Chairman Mao sold for $17.4m (£8.8m).
