American Barney Oldfield broke 60 mph with the Henry Ford-built ‘999’ at the Indianapolis Fairgrounds dirt oval. With a time of 59.6 seconds, Oldfield became the first person to officially drive a petrol-powered car at the ‘incredible’ speed of a mile a minute.
