Tuesday 20th December 1892

Alexander Brown and George Stillman of Syracuse, New York, patented the first inflatable automobile tire. Before the pneumatic tire, wheels were often made of solid rubber. This made travel a bumpy experience. After all, the streets of 1892 were made of dirt or cobblestone. Some horse-drawn carriages had been made with inflatable tires, but Brown and Stillman got the first patent for pneumatic automobile tires. Their tire was manufactured at the Hartford Rubber Works in Hartford Connecticut in 1895. In July of that year the Duryea motor company used the Brown-Stillman tires on their “motorised wagon” and won the $5,000 first prize in the 54 mile long automobile race which was reported as the first automobile race held in the United States. Charles Duryea “covered the distance in 7 hours, 53 minutes at an average speed of 7 miles per hour.
